The Indian Reality of Maya

It is like water.

You cannot know the source for sure, because it is cyclical and sustained.

All indigenous religions of India agree on the nature of reality.

Maya is more than a root word of many tongues of this land.

It is an oceanic concept in to which rivers of introspection over the ages have poured their offerings.

Maya is disruptive. It contradicts many fruits of concrete intelligence.

It is especially harsh on the conventional senses of humans.

Who can accept the pettiness of enmity or ego?

Perhaps it is the splendor of the Almighty that is easier to translate in to daily living.

That must be why Indians find it easier to prostrate before symbols of God, than to see the essential unity in all the diversity that surrounds us.

Scripture is an enabling panacea to live as per the dictates of the Indian philosophy of Maya and its powers to ensnare us.

This is a prime benefit of daily recitation of the Japji Sahib.

Live By the Word of God to Escape Entrapment by Maya of Mortal Senses

Are you a victim of Maya. Do you seek escape?

Or are you a victor?

I would like to add a few words on Maya- a creation of God that has bewitched most of us.

God created the Universe; He created 84 lakh forms of life. He placed them all in midst of Maya. Among these various forms of life, He created woman and man as the crown of all life forms. Only to this life form did He give ‘Free Will’. He gave the choice - be virtuous, and get out of this cycle. Or, be a sinner and wander endlessly in this cycle of life and death. Other forms, being given no choice, are led by Maya through to their death, to be reborn, as another specie till they achieve human form .The humans, despite being give the option, forgo the opportunity to meet the Lord. Instead, most of them chose to be led astray by Maya. Most religious scriptures recognize ‘Maya’ as an enchantress. It is an enchantress, which, without teeth, is gobbling up the whole world. Gurbani confirms: ‘Maya mamta mohini jin danta jag khaeea’. Maya is a powerful and destructive intoxicant; it corrupts and wastes away one’s life. It makes mortals run after wealth, name, power & fame unabashedly, using right means or wrong. Mortals do not realise that the glory bestowed by Maya lasts but four days; (when it chooses to depart) it does not take but a moment. Yet, mortals run after things that they will have to leave behind. They get into entanglements that are of no use to them in the process of getting liberation. Gurbani cautions: Don’t get entangled into gold, your woman or your beautiful bed; these are things that you shall have to leave behind. Don’t sit, stuffed with pride, in the mansion that you have built; it will not go with you. These are simply baits, in the net spread out Maya. Gurbani says: ‘Mortal, be wise, don’t get ensnared into the trap’. What is wrong with earning wealth, name or fame, one would say. No religion would be against this. It is only that the religions expect us to exercise caution & vigilance. 'Caution' means that acquiring wealth should not become the ‘Be all & end all’ objective of life. It should not get to that extent that one is left with no time for improving his spiritual ‘net worth’. ‘Vigilance’ implies two things. First, we should strive to improve our self- worth through legitimate means, that is, ‘Means’ should justify the ‘Ends’ and not vice versa. Second, the efforts should be restricted to meet our ‘Needs’ and not our ‘Greed’. But it hardly ever happens this way. Maya makes mortals spiritually blind. It is rare mortal who understands that spiritual knowledge revealed by our Gurus is the only true wealth that goes with us unto the next birth. Rest all is ephemeral-transient and perishable; it comes & goes during our life time. On death, it does not go with us unto the next world. Those who understand this are blessed. Those who don't, may God bless them!

The noble words of Premjit remind me of my Guru. It is tempting to get trapped by Maya. Only daily communion with the Living Guru can protect us.
