The Living Guru must be pleased to know that the turban and uncut hair have become so seamlessly associated with raw courage. You may or may not have Sikh friends, but the whole world knows them to be fighters par excellence. Few other communities have made matching sacrifices in the defense of the Mother Land. Sikhs are known for their martial qualities around the world.
A Sikh is a tiger or a tigress only in the physical sense. Mentally, they are disciples if they recite the Japji Sahib every day, as they are born to do,
Discipleship and courage go together. A disciple knows only one fear.
Use the Fear of God to Fan Flames of Internal Purification
Fear of God makes a Sikh indomitable and courageous without exception.
It is the only fear, with no reason or space to be scared of any mortal.
The brave disciple fears only God.
The Living Guru brooks no disobedience, but it liberates from fear.
The Living Guru is available to all.

I would like to add a few words on the term ‘Sikh’. The term Sikh was first used by Guru Nanak, the founder Guru of a new religion now known as ‘Sikhism’. ‘Sikh’ is derived from the Hindi term ‘Seekh’ which means ‘Learn’. Guru Nanak named his disciples and even himself as ‘Sikh’ to signify that we need to learn from our Gurus and from the ‘school life’ all the time. Our learning does not end on completion of our graduation from colleges. In fact, there is much more to learn from the school of life. Those who learn from the mistakes they commit in the ‘school of life’ and correct themselves become better managers/administrators/ leaders. Likewise, for spiritual evolution, we need not commit mistakes to learn; we can learn from our Gurus and the essence of the revelations that they leave behind in the scriptures. Hence, we all need to be ‘Sikhs’ all the time. The concept of ‘Singhs’ derived from Hindi word ‘Sin`h’ meaning ‘lion’ was introduced by the last Guru Gobind Singh. This was basically done to convert the ‘passive philosophy’ prevalent during His times into a ‘fighting spirit’. Two martyrdoms of the 5th and 9th Guru did not seem to bring about any change in the mind sets of the powers to be. So he introduced the concept of ‘Baptisement’ wherein he ordained all sikhs to dispense with their caste name and replace it with ‘Singh’. Thus Guru Gobind Rai became Guru Gobind Singh after Baptisement. This way, he sought to remove inter caste discrimination and built a single martial race named as ‘Singhs’. He taught martial arts to his ‘Singhs’ to fight against forcible conversions and other social injustices that the rulers perpetrated. Thus all ‘Sikhs’ became ‘Singhs’ and rest is history!
The histories of Sikh learning and courage are inextricably woven with the destiny of India as a sub-continent. Swami Vivekananda has exclaimed that while the past of India is glorious, the future can be even better. I believe that the Living Guru expects all Indians to achieve even greater heights as one generation evolves in to another.
